A Digital Climate Project for Young People in Malawi

In partnership with secondary schools in the Nkhata Bay District, "Open Your Mind" is a hands-on project designed to empower young people with the digital skills and critical thinking necessary for navigating the digital world. Through this initiative, we aim to provide students with the tools to access information, foster critical analysis, and integrate climate action and resilience into their everyday lives.

Goals:

  • To equip a group of students with the skills to use the internet for learning, research, and digital communication.

  • To deepen their understanding of climate issues, particularly deforestation, and help them explore solutions.

  • To inspire students to use their new digital knowledge to share climate action ideas with others.

Empowering Students Through Digital Learning and Climate Action

Over the course of the program, students will be introduced to the digital landscape, including learning how to effectively use the internet for research and education. They will also explore how technology can be used to address local and global climate challenges. The project encourages students to actively engage with digital tools, allowing them to gain practical skills in areas like online learning, information analysis, and climate action.

Throughout the program, students will work on real-world issues such as deforestation, food insecurity, and climate change in Malawi, using digital resources to research these topics and compare findings with local observations. In doing so, they will not only enhance their digital literacy but also become more informed and empowered to take part in climate action.

By the end of the program, students will have developed their own digital products—such as videos, blogs, or presentations—highlighting their findings and raising awareness about the climate issues that matter most to them. These projects will then be shared with their peers, helping to spread knowledge and inspire action across the district.

The project’s hands-on approach combines learning with action, creating a space for students to learn new skills, apply them in meaningful ways, and make a difference in their community.
